Minnesota Valley Humane Society

For many kids, the family pet is their best friend. The Minnesota Valley Humane Society wants to teach children to be a friend in return. MVHS, with NAHEE (National Association for Humane and Environmental Education), are teaming up to distribute KIND News,a monthly classroom newspaper, to as many elementary school classrooms as possible. KIND News not only teaches kids about responsible pet care, it also focuses on good character by emphasizing core values such as honesty, compassion, and fairness. It aims to teach children the importance of treating animals, natural habitats, and one another with kindness and respect.

Approximately 35,000 teachers use the monthly newspaper nationwide to supplement their science, reading, writing, and character education curricula. Local teachers will also benefit from MVHS' Humane Educator, Kara DeVriendt, who visits classrooms and provides shelter tours to complement the monthly newspaper.
